Key Protocols

Families should familiarize themselves with some of the common protocols, practices and terms we use during an emergency

Listed below are a few of the most common protocols and drills that are practiced and families should be familiar with.

When a school is confronted with an emergency, staff will assess the situation and then decide on a course of action.

EVACUATION is used when there is possible danger INSIDE the school.

This includes: fire, gas leak, building damage, and other reasons.

  • Students are escorted by staff to a safe location outside
  • As needed, everyone relocates to an offsite evacuation center
  • If necessary, a controlled Student Release Procedure will be used to release students to an authorized emergency contact
  • School re-entry is only permitted after an ALL-CLEAR is issued

LOCK-DOWN is used when there is a THREAT of potential threat of violence INSIDE the school.

This includes events such as: active shooter, armed intruder, or hostile incident in school buildings.

  • Everyone retreats to a securable space. There is the possibility of students and staff having to run away or hide.
  • Everyone stay vigilant and ready to take additional actions.
  • Students will not be released until the Lock-Down is over.

HOLD AND SECURE is used when there is a threat or potential threat of violence OUTSIDE the school.

This includes events such as: criminal activity, police pursuits, or a dangerous offender in the area (not in the school).

  • All exterior doors and windows are locked.
  • No outsider access into the building while protocol is in effect.
  • If the Hold and Secure extends past dismissal times, doors will remain locked and parents will be provided dismissal information.
  • Students will not be released until the Hold and Secure is over.

SHELTER-IN-PLACE is used when it is safer to be INSIDE than outside and there is NO THREAT OF VIOLENCE.

This includes events such as; dangerous goods spill, severe weather, wildlife on grounds, etc.

  • Everyone retreats to designated indoor locations. Locations will vary depending on the nature of the incident.
  • Staff accompany students enroute to, from, and at the location(s).
  • Access to or from the school may be restricted.
  • Students will not be released until the Shelter-In-Place is over.
